Abstract

A micronutrient composition comprises a polyurethane foam containing at least 25% by weight (e.g. 25% to 75%) of a chelate of a plant trace element (e.g. iron, zinc, copper, manganese and cobalt). The foam may be prepared by adding a polyisocyanate to a mixture of a polyol, chelate, catalyst and emulsifier, or by first reacting a polyisocyanate with a polyol to form a pre-polymer, and then adding a chelate, catalyst, and emulsifier. In examples the chelates are ferric chelate of N,N1-di-ortho-hydroxyphenolacetic acid ethylene diamine, ferric chelate of ethylenediamine tetra-acetic acid, ferric chelate of b -hydroxy-ethyl ethylene-diamine triacetic acid, ferric chelate of diethylenetriaminepentacetic acid and the zinc chelate of ethylenediaminetetra-acetic acid; the foams are prepared from toluene diisocyanate, N, N1-tetra - b - hydroxyethylethylenediamine, trichloromonofluoromethane, a silicone stabilizer, castor oil, dialkyl phthalate, ethyl cellulose and glyceryl monoricinoleate. In examples the chelates are ferric chelate of N,N1-di-orthohydroxyphenolacetic acid ethylene diamine, ferric chelate of ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid, ferric chelate of b -hydroxy-ethyl ethylenediamine triacetic acid, ferric chelate of diethylenetriamine fentacetic acid and the zinc chelate of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid; the foams are prepared from toluene diisocyanate, N, N1-tetra-b -hydroxyethylethylene diamine, trichloromonofluoromethane, a silicone stabilizer, castor oil, dialkyl phthalate, ethyl cellulose and glyceryl monoricinoleate.
