Abstract

A lubricating oil (e.g. mineral oil) is stabilized against oxidative deterioration by addition thereto of a bisphenol disulphide in which sulphur atoms are attached to the phenol radicals at ortho positions relative to the hydroxy groups and each phenol nucleus carries at least two alkyl substituents. Suitable compounds are 2,21-dithio-bis-(4-methyl-6-tertiary butylphenol),2,21-dithio-bis(4-methyl-6-tertiary octyl phenol) and 2,21-dithio-bis-(4,6-ditertiary butyl phenol). Another antioxidant may be present, particularly the corresponding monosulphide.
