972, 743. Washing open width fabric. GREENBANK ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. Oct. 11, 1963 [Nov. 6, 1962], No. 41863/62. Heading D1L. In apparatus for washing open width material A having a series of at least two tanks B<SP>1</SP>, B<SP>2</SP> of which each tank has cleaner liquid than the preceding one, a pair of squeeze rollers C<SP>1</SP>, C<SP>2</SP> is provided between at least one pair of the tanks and liquid, cleaner than that in the earlier tank of the pair, is supplied to the fabric as it emerges from the nip. As shown liquid is pumped from the tank B<SP>2</SP> by a pump D to a pair of tanks E<SP>1</SP>, E<SP>2</SP> having weirs e<SP>1</SP>, e<SP>2</SP> over which it flows to form a ford C in the nip of the squeeze rollers, and plates C<SP>1</SP> being provided alternatively clean liquid is delivered from an external source e.g. the mains. The fabric A after being squeezed thus takes up clean liquid rather than air. The dirty liquid expelled by the squeeze rollers falls onto a plate C<SP>2</SP> whence it is returned to tank B<SP>1</SP> or to a drain.
