Variations in the quantities of solid particles in slurries are detected by passing the slurry from tank 11 by means of pump 12 up a conduit 10 against a constant head, which may be provided by allowing the slurry to overflow into a trap 13, the pressure being detected or measured at a point in the conduit 10. As shown, a constant head device 20 supplies water through pipe 19 to an injection nozzle or orifice plate 18, so that a jet of water is directed into the bell-mouthed end of a pipe 15 connected to an intermediate point of conduit 10, the pressure in envelope 17, surrounding the injection device, being measured by gauge glass 23. A gauge glass 28, at the top of conduit 10, may be provided for comparison with gauge glass 23, both gauge glasses being provided with sand-bed or porous plug flow-restrictors 25, 29 to even out pressure pulsations.
