Abstract

1414475 Measuring density UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 16 Feb 1973 [24 Feb 1972] 8696/72 Heading G1S To measure the density of a liquid, a constant flow of gas is supplied to a dip tube 1, the free end of which is immersed in the liquid, a float 5 also immersed in the liquid engaging in the end of the tube and restricting the gas flow therefrom to an extent depending on the density of the liquid, the difference in pressure between the gas in tube 1 and a datum pressure being a direct measure of the density of the liquid. The datum may be atmospheric pressure, in which case the free end of the tube 1 is only just immersed in the liquid under test, but may alternatively (as shown) be the pressure of a further flow of gas passing, at the same constant rate as the flow in tube 1, through a second, unobstructed dip tube 2 immersed in the liquid to substantially the same depth as the tube 1, a differential pressure measuring device 4 measuring the pressure difference between the gas in tubes 1 and 2. The tube 1 may project slightly beyond the end of the tube 2 so that gas flow from tube 2 is not impeded by the float.
