Abstract

972,418. Ink ribbon mechanisms. SIEMENS & HALSKE A.G. May 13, 1963 [May 14, 1962; May 18, 1962], No. 11767/63. Heading B6F. A typewriter having a movable type hammer carriage 8, Fig. 1, is provided with an endless ink ribbon 1 carried by guide rollers 2 mounted on the chassis of the typewriter and is advanced and inked by a combined drive and inking roller 3 on carriage return. The drive roller 3 is fixedly mounted on a shaft 4, having rotatably mounted thereon a pulley 5 carrying a cable reciprocating the type hammer carriage 8 in the letter-spacing and carriage return direction. For maximum wear the ribbon is stationary during typing and is advanced in unison with the carriage during carriage return so that no relative movement occurs between the ribbon and the ink ribbon guide fork 9. Advance of the ribbon is effected by torsion spring 6 driving the shaft 4 during carriage return the spring 7 acting as a brake during typing to restrain the ink ribbon from moving, whilst the spring 6 is being uncoiled during the carriage movement in the letter-spacing direction. In another embodiment in Fig. 2, the guide fork 9 is replaced by a fork assembly comprising a pair of leaf spring fork arms 13 having ribbon retaining lugs 17 and a pair of guide rollers 14, carried on a bracket 12, pivotally mounted on a shaft 16.
