972,557. Typewriters. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. Sept. 29, 1961 [Oct. 6, 1960], No. 35314/61. Class B6F. Type band machines; hammer impression arrangements.-A printer mechanism in Fig. 1 having an endless type band 10, carrying type members 13, includes an impact hammer 28, which is partly arrested by impact with a web of printing material 20, of varying thickness, and partly by coincident impact with an energy-absorbing member 39, of synthetic rubber, whereby the arrestment of the hammer by the web is greater when the web is thick. The hammers 28, supported on leaf spring 29 are movable under their own inertia when actuated by armatures 32, on energization of electromagnets 33, to strike the type members 13 and the hammers are partially arrested in their inertial motion by abutments 42 on the hammers, engaging the faces of portions 40 of the resilient shock-absorbing member 39, bonded to a mounting member 38, in Fig. 2, attached to a support member 37, which is mounted fixedly on a hammer support 30. Types and printing surfaces.-The type band 10, supported on rollers 11 and 12 of which the former may be power driven, comprises a steel band 14, in Fig. 2, coated with an energy-absorbing synthetic plastic material, and type members 13, composed of block portions 15 and 16, which are clamped by screws to the steel band 14. The block portion 16 has the rear side provided with gear teeth 17 to engage corresponding gear teeth on the roller 11. The type band is located in a guide member 18, supported by upper and lower planks 19, which guide member may also back up the type band on impact. Web guiding and feeding arrangements.-A record strip 20 passes over stationary guide members 21, 22, Fig. 2, and is advanced step by step by feeding means including sprocket wheels 23 and pin feed tractors 24.
