Abstract

971,880. Winding coils; soldering. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. May 10, 1963 [May 16, 1962], No. 18891/62. Headings B3A and B3R. [Also in Division B8] A machine for successively winding coils on the polepieces C1, C2, Fig. 4, of a plurality of coil formers, comprises a winding head 1 that is mounted above a table 5 indexing the coil formers sequentially past the winding head, there being cam means 10 for causing a traversing action of the winding head relatively to the polepieces C1, C2. The table 5 is also capable of radial movement to place each former at various radial settings permitting the winding head to act successively on the two polepieces thereon and to establish connection of the windings with tags D1, D2 on two terminal posts P1, P2, Fig. 6, of the former. A motor 12 drives a lead screw 7, through a slip clutch in a casing 8 to rotate the head 1 via gears in a casing 4. On the lead screw 7 is a nut 9 that engages a saw-toothed track on a cam bar 10, the motion of the nut relatively to the saw-toothed track causing the cam bar 10 to oscillate up and down. This oscillation is conveyed to the winding head 1 to traverse the winding on its polepiece. The device includes limit switches actuated by a nut 9 such that when the nut 9 has travelled a predetermined distance in one direction the motor 12 is reversed and the nut 9 then travels in the opposite direction. At the same time that the motor 12 reverses, the table 5 is displaced radially to bring the second of the two polepieces beneath the winding head 1. Since the direction of rotation of the winding head 1 is now reversed the winding on polepiece C2 will be in the opposite electrical sense to the one wound on polepiece C1. Further limit switches reduce the speed of the motor 12 just prior to the reversal of motion thereof to prevent breakage of the winding at reversal. A ram 6 descends during each winding to hold the former securely in position on the table 5. After each former has been wound it is passed to a soldering position having a pair of soldering irons 16 (only one iron is shown) fed with solder 15, Fig. 4, to solder the wire ends to tags D1, D2 on the terminal posts P1, P2. The formers then pass a cutting position where a pair of cutters 18 cuts the wire connection between successive formers. . Each former is finally ejected by manuallyoperated means 19 where the operator replaces the ejected wound former with an unwound former.
