1321290 Soldering; winding coils PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 8 July 1970 [11 July 1969] 33173/70 Headings B3A, B3E and B3R In a method of tinning the ends of a wire coil during the coil winding process (in which, typically, wire 5 from a reel 3 is fed intermittently by rollers 9, 9<SP>1</SP> towards a mandrel 13 on which a predetermined length 5<SP>1</SP> of wire is wound by a winding finger 17) a soldering tool 23 is advanced towards the wire during the periods in which the wire is stationary together with flux cored solder wire 35, the soldering tool 23 having a tip 25 the width of which is equivalent to the length of one tinned coil end plus one tinned coil beginning. The tip 25 has a groove 29 in which the wire 5 may be located. A shearing device 11 severs the wire subsequently at the middle of the tinned portion to provide a tinned end for the coil already wound and a tinned beginning for the next coil. A wire guide 31 is vibrated to assist in disposing the wire 5 in the groove 29 and to facilitate removal of lacquer from the wire. In the coil winding process the finger 17 rotates about the mandrel and is simultaneously moved in the direction, 21. The wound coil drops from the mandrel when the wire is severed by the shearing device 11.
