Abstract
1327871 Coil winding machine WESTERN ELECTRIC CO Inc 27 April 1971 [27 April 1970] 11539/71 Heading HIT Apparatus for simultaneously winding five transformers 22 each of which consists of up to six separately insulated windings successively wound on to a bobbin 21 comprises bobbins 21 mounted on spindles 31 for rotation therewith and tubular wire guides 36 which guide wire strands 23 to the bobbins and which are mounted on carriages 38,39,37 such that they can be driven linearly along three mutually perpendicular axes "X", "Y", "Z" by motors 33, 41, 42 and orbitally about one axis "Z" by a motor 43. The "X" carriage 38 is connected through various drive mechanisms to one end of a lever 152 which is pivoted by a pin 157 intermediate its ends and is driven in oscillatory fashion at its other end by a member 148. The member 148 is driven in oscillatory manner by motor 33 acting through a series of reversing gears and clutches, and thereby causes reciprocatory movement of the carriage 38 and wire guides 36 in the "X" direction. The position of the pivot 157 relative to the ends of the lever 152 is adjustable to vary the pitch of the windings wound on the bobbins. The motor 33 drives the spindles 31 as well as the carriage 38. Automatic control facilities for the apparatus include devices which are programmable to select for each transformer wound the number of windings, and for each winding, the winding pitch, the number of turns, the terminals 27 of the bobbin to which the ends of the winding are connected, the number of turns of wire about these terminals, and the amount of insulation covering the winding. Various means including detents, cam followers and linear variable differential transformers are employed by the control mechanism to sense the exact position of the carriages 37, 38, 39 and the spindles 31 at any time. The mode of operation is as follows; the wire guides 36 by "Z" orbital motion wind several turns on to anchor pins 352 carried on the tape carriage 51; a selected number of turns are wrapped about first terminals 27 of bobbins 21 by "Z" orbital motion of the wire guides 36; the portions of wire extending between the anchor pins 352 and the first terminals are severed by cutting rods 351 also carried by the tape carriage 51; the selected number of turns of selected pitch of the first windings are wound on to the bobbins 21 by rotation of the spindles carrying the bobbins in combination with reciprocatory motion of the wire guides 36 in the "X" direction, this latter motion resulting from the oscillation of the pivoted lever 152; second terminals 27 are wrapped with the selected number of turns by "Z" orbital motion of the wire guides 36; the tape carriage 51 is driven towards the bobbins 21 and pushes adhesive backed insulating tapes 26 against the first windings just wound on the bobbins, the bobbins are rotated by the spindles so that the selected amount of insulation tape covers the windings and the tapes 26 are cut by blades mounted on the tape carriage 51. At this stage the first winding is completed and the above sequence is repeated until the selected number of windings have been wound on each of the bobbins. The description includes detail of the mechanical parts and a logic circuit for use in controlling the apparatus.
