Abstract
1,148,630. Winding coils; wrapping terminals. GENERAL MOTORS CORP. 22 Dec., 1966 [27 Dec., 1965], No. 57454/66. Headings B3A and 53E. A method of automatically winding a wire coil on to a bobbin and electrically connecting the coil to terminals carried by the bobbin comprises mounting the bobbin on a displaceable support for movement through a series of work stations, moving the bobbin to a first work station adjacent a supply of said wire, guiding a first portion of said wire about a first terminal of the bobbin, winding the wire about said bobbin, guiding a second portion of the wire about a second terminal and advancing the bobbin to a second station and cutting and wrapping said wire about the terminals at said second station. Coil bobbins 24 to be wound each comprise a flat central part 25, which may house a rotatable magnetic armature, and four corner parts of which two, 27, 29, are provided with metallic terminals 30, 32. The wound bobbins may be used in electrical gauges. The bobbins 24 to be wound are held in arms 12-22 on a table 10 and are carried thereby through six working stations. At one station a coil of enamelled wire 38 is wound about the bobbin 24 by a rotatable flyer 34. Prior to such winding a guide 40 is moved down to the terminal 32 so that the wire is guided behind it and after winding a guide 42 moves the wire extending to the flyer 34 to the terminal 30 so the wire is guided around this terminal when the bobbin is moved to the next station. Insulation is burned from those portions of the wire to be engaged by the terminals by gas torches 44, 46. Two stations further on the wire is cut off and wrapped around the terminals 30, 32 by rotated tools 48, 50 lowered by air cylinder means and co-operating with a lower cut-off die 52 raised by air cylinder means. At the next station the wound bobbin is removed to be replaced by an empty bobbin.
