Abstract

971,707. Heating steam boilers by hot liquids; superheaters. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE, and INSTITUT FRANCAIS DU PETROLE DES CARBURANTS ET LUBRIFIANTS. Sept. 21, 1961 [Sept. 21, 1960], No. 33856/61. Heading F4A. [Also in Division G6] In a nuclear reactor an organic fluid e.g. gas oil or heavy fuel oil, is used as a coolant and transfers heat from the reactor core to a liquid, e.g. water, in a heat exchanger, a portion of the oil being withdrawn and burned in a furnace to superheat the steam produced in the heat exchanger, an equal amount of the oil being added to the circuit as is withdrawn. The oil after being heated in the reactor 1 is cooled by water arriving under pressure via the pipe 8 in the heat exchanger 4. A portion of the oil passes into the storage and deactivating tank 13 and pipe 14 from the pipe 12, and is burned in the furnace 10 so superheating the steam passing to the outlet 20 from the heat exchanger 4. An expansion chamber 17 allows the pressure of the oil to be regulated and to allow any gas or vapour present to escape to the furnace 10. The water may be preheated by being circulated in contact with the reactor.
