A roof bar of box section having a height of the order of half its overall width is shaped as shown to define webs a<SP>1</SP>, a<SP>11</SP>, flanges b<SP>1</SP>, b<SP>11</SP>, side ribs c, roof engaging ribs d and a recessed underpart for the reception of a prop head. The roof bars are provided with tongue and fork connections for coupling together, downward deflection of the joint being prevented by a reinforced stirrup i, k incorporating a resilient pressure element m and a locking wedge l.
