Abstract
970,993. Rotary pumps, motors and meters. BOPP & REUTHER G.m.b.H. March 1, 1961 [July 23, 1960], No. 7497/61. Heading F1F. A rotary piston machine such as a pump, engine or volumetric measuring appliance, comprising a pair of positively coupled rotary pistons 1, 2, Fig. 1, as shown, of oval shape with peripheral engaging teeth 3, includes wedge-shaped recesses 5, Fig. 2, on each side face of the pistons closely adjacent the walls of a chamber 7 housing the pistons. Rotation of the pistons in the direction of the arrows 4 sets up a pressure rise in the direction of the arrows 6 in the wedge-shaped recesses to produce fluid pressure forces urging the pistons away from the chamber walls to reduce mechanical friction whilst maintaining an effective seal between the pistons and the chamber walls and also maintain the pistons in a central position. The wedges may be arranged symmetrically with respect to the semi-axes of the pistons so that they are effective in either direction of rotation of the pistons.
