Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of general formula <FORM:0970941/C1/1> wherein R1 is an alkyl (1-5C) group, a cycloalkyl group containing 5 or 6 ring carbon atoms, an aryl group, or an aralkyl group; R2 is a saturated or unsaturated alkyl (1-5C) group or an aralkyl group; R3 is a saturated or unsaturated alkyl (1-4C) group or an aralkyl group; and the ring A may be substituted in the 6, 7 or 8 position by a halogen atom, an alkyl (1-5C) group, an alkoxy (1-5C) group or a trifluoromethyl group: and their preparation by reacting an alkali metal salt of a compound of formula <FORM:0970941/C1/2> with a compound of formula R2X where X is a chlorine, bromine or iodine atom; the alkali metal salt may be formed by dissolving the metal in an alkanol (1-4C) and reacting the alkoxide formed with said compound. Starting materials II are formed by reacting substituted anilines and diethylmalonates with removal of ethanol. Pharmaceutical compositions comprise compounds I of the invention with pharmaceutical carriers; tranquillising, analgesic and antibacterial properties are mentioned. The Provisional Specification refers to R1 also as substituted aryl. Specification 855,929 is referred to.
