[Also in Division F1] A two-stage rotary oil-sealed vacuum pump driven by a spindle 4 and disposed in an oil reservoir 1 supplying sealing and lubricating medium, includes between the space being evacuated and the pump, a spring-loaded, non- return valve 7 having a hollow plunger 16 formed with a head 18 slidable in a bore 14 to which pressure oil is supplied by a pump 6 driven by the spindle 4. When the vacuum pump is operative the plunger is urged upwardly by the pressure oil against its spring and air is sucked by the pump through the valve inlet 11, holes 19 in the plunger and the valve outlet 12. In the event of the vacuum pump being unintentionally or deliberately stopped, oil pressure beneath the head 18 decreases whence the plunger closes on to its seat 20 to isolate the vacuum system from the pump and so prevent oil being sucked into the system. A manuallyadjustable needle valve 9 adjusts the pressure in the bore 14. Instead of the plunger valve 7, a valve coupled to a peripherally mounted spring-loaded diaphragm may be used.
