Abstract

Cyclic alcohols are prepared by mixing an aqueous solution of boric acid with a saturated cyclic hydrocarbon, evaporating water from this mixture so that boric acid separates out in a finely divided state in the hydrocarbon, oxidizing cyclic hydrocarbon in the presence of the boric acid by means of molecular or free oxygen so that an ester of the corresponding cyclic alcohol forms, and subsequently obtaining this alcohol from the ester by hydrolysis. The boric acid may be obtained by hydrolysis of the ester formed in the oxidation of a previous quantity of saturated cyclic hydrocarbon in the presence of boric acid. Before the boric acid solution is mixed with the hydrocarbon to be oxidized, acid by-products e.g. dicarboxylic acids are removed by basic anion exchanger and recovered. Examples are given of the formation of cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone from the oxidation of cyclohexane. Other saturated cyclic hydrocarbons e.g. cyclo pentane, cyclo heptane, cyclo octane and cyclo dodecane may be similarly oxidized and the corresponding cyclic alcohols obtained.
