Abstract

970,441. Manipulators. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. July 24, 1963 [Aug. 2, 1962], No. 29752/62. Heading B4Q. A manipulator comprising a carriage 7 traversable on a gantry 8 running on rails 10 carries a handling appliance 1 on an arm 2 pivoted to the lower one 4 of three telescopic tubes 4 . . . 6, these tubes when in their retracted position being nested within one another and stowed within the carriage. An electric hoist (not shown) on the carriage 7 controls the extension of the tubes by hoist cables 18 passing round pulleys 19 secured to the tube 5. The tube 6 is guided by rollers 12 carried by a shroud 11 secured to the base of the carriage 7, the tube 5 is guided by rollers 14 secured to the tube 6 and the tube 4 is guided by rollers 16 secured to the tube 5. The tube 4 is coupled to tube 6 by chains 22 connected at their ends to the tubes 4, 6 and passing over sprockets 23 carried by the tube 5. The tube 5 is coupled to the tube 6 by chains 20 connected at their ends to the tube 5 and shroud 11 and passing over sprockets 21 carried by the tube 6. The combined weight of the tube 4, arm 2 and appliance 1 is greater than the weight of the tube 6 and thus the chains 22 are held in tension and maintain the sprockets 21 in engagement with the chains 20. If the tube 5 is raised or lowered at a uniform speed by the cables 18 the tube 6 moves at half that speed and the tube 4 at one-and-a-half times that speed. Thus the appliance 1 is raised or lowered at a uniform speed over its entire range of movement.
