Abstract

[Also in Division B6] A device comprises means for marking weblike material such as a tape to indicate a feeding direction and means for severing the material transversely adjacent the marked portion. As shown in Fig. 1, the device comprises a blade 4 having a cutting edge 7 of triangular form and a blade 8 having a cutting edge 9. In operation, the tape 6 is lifted until it is engaged by the edge 7 which cuts a slit, Fig. 6, in the tape to indicate the feeding direction. Further lifting of the tape causes it to engage with the edge 9 and then by pulling sideways on the tape, Fig. 5, it is severed transversely. The edge 9 may be inclined at an angle, other than a right-angle, to the feeding direction of the tape. The edge 9 may be serrated. In a modification, Fig. 8, the blade 4 is pivotally mounted and has a brake portion 13 and a spring-influenced stop portion 14. In operation, engagement of the tape with the blade 4 causes the blade to pivot anticlockwise to cause the portion 13 to engage the tape which is thus gripped during marking and severing.
