A tailgate apparatus for raising and lowering loads as described in Specification 711,241 has in addition to first latching means as described therein for holding the platform in its raised position second latching means, for holding the platform in the truck-closing position, which co-operate with the first latching means to prevent their accidental unlatching when the platform is in the truck-closing position. As in the prior Specification the first latch means comprise members 42, 43, Fig. 6, mounted on a control shaft 41, which co-operate with members on two of the arms supporting the platform 5, but in addition the shaft mounts members 69, 70 of the second latch means which can be engaged by members 68 secured to frame members of the lifting mechanism. With the tailgate platform 5 in the truck-closing position, Fig. 2, a movement of the control lever 54 to unlatch the first latching members is prevented since this movement would involve rotation of the control shaft 41 which also mounts the members 69 of the second latching means and these latter members are prevented from moving by engagement with the surface 70 of the members 68. With the platform lowered to the horizontal raised position the arms 24, 25 are telescoped thus disengaging the latch members 68, 69 and allowing rotation of the control shaft 41 to unlatch the first latching means.
