970,275. Driving means for gantries. WILLIAM H. FARRER Ltd. Oct. 2, 1962 [Oct. 5, 1961], No. 35860/61. Heading B8B. A gantry, e.g. for a travelling crane, is driven along rails 21, Fig. 2, by roller chains 15 supported by sprockets 16, the chains engaging spaced abutments 22 alongside the rails 21. A pair of chains 15, interconnected by tie-rods 18, Fig. 3, which engage the abutments, is provided at each end of the gantry. An electric motor drives the chain sprockets 16 through a shaft 12 and pinions 13. Wheels 20 at both ends of the gantry run on the rails 21. The abutments are spaced so that at least two are engaged by the chain at any one time. A rail 23 mounted on the gantry guides the chains into engagement with the abutments.
