In an endless band vacuum filter, a filter cloth 4 rests on elastic support 5 having apertures 6 and supported by rollers 7. A wall 2 encloses a portion of filter cloth and forms therewith a pressing tank to receive liquid to be filtered. The wall 2 abuts on raised bands 30 on the support 5. A tank 8, making vacuum seal with support 5 is provided with pipe 9 for discharge of liquid and for production of the vacuum, and receives filtered liquid, or washing liquid admitted through inlet 3. Support 5 and filter cloth 4 are movable intermittently by driving roller 10 so that successive portions of filter cloth form the floor of the pressing tank. A series of wires or threads 12 are provided for removal of filter cake, and spray 17 and brush 27 are provided for washing the filter cloth. Wall 2 is raised or lowered on to the filter cloth by time-controlled pump 25, which admits pressure liquid from tank 26 into hydraulic cylinders 23, thus operating vertical shafts 21 provided with coil springs 22 and carried on transverse members 20, of a frame. Alternatively, the wall 2 may be raised or lowered mechanically. After filtration and washing the filter cake, the wall is raised, and the filter cloth and support moved on 50% of their length, filter cake being detached by wires 12. The wall is then lowered, and filtration continued with simultaneous cleaning of the filter cloth. The apparatus may be modified to be used under pressure.
