The expansible spaces, each bounded by an elastic ring, between adjacent filter plates of the press of the parent Specification are replaced by expansible spaces each bounded by telescoping annular parts, one on each plate. Mixture to be filtered is fed under pressure into the bottom of each frame 123 (the plates and frames being in contact-not as shown), the feeding being stopped when the cakes formed on each filter plate in a filter chamber almost touch. Excess mixture is then drained back into the supply pipe 136 and thereafter washing liquid is introduced through the same pipe and passes in the same direction as the filtrate through the cakes, leaving by pipes 138 and 140. Compressed air is next passed, again in the same direction through the cakes to dry them. Finally, compressed air is passed in the reverse direction to free the plates from the cakes, the air escaping through the pipe 136. The supply of fluid under pressure which has been holding the plates 150, 160 against the frames 123 is now cut off and the spaces between the plates are placed in communication with a source of vacuum whereby the plates are telescoped in pairs to the positions shown. The frames 123 are then simultaneously rotated by an offset shaft (not shown) to displace them from their positions between the plates and further frames diametrically opposed to them are thereby moved into position between the plates to enable filtration to be recommenced whilst the other frames are being freed from cakes.
