Abstract

970,247. Thermo-electric devices. S. SMITH & SONS (ENGLAND) Ltd. June 5, 1963 [March 23, 1962], No. 11126/62. Heading H1K. A thermocouple assembly consists of a metallic tube containing a mass of compacted powdered metal oxide which is electrically insulating and thermally conductive, having an electrical conductor formed in two parts of different metals embedded therein and extending the length of the tube. In one embodiment (Fig. 2) a number of thermocouples 10 are embedded in a mass 11 of compacted powdered magnesium, beryllium or aluminium oxide surrounded by a tube 12 of copper, stainless steel, tantalum or platinum with a central swaged portion; the thermocouple junctions 13 being distributed along the length of the tube. The wires 10 may be of a chromiumnickel or aluminium-nickel alloy or of copper-construction. In a further embodiment (Fig. 1, not shown), the above arrangement is enclosed in a further tube of such resistivity that it may serve as a heating element, of aluminium or any of the metals which may form the inner tube, and spaced therefrom by more powdered metal oxide. An application of the thermocouple as a liquid level sensor is described in which heating wires are included in the inner tube.
