Abstract

1,029,852. Resistance thermometers. CIBA Ltd. Jan. 16, 1963 [Jan. 16, 1962], No. 2053/63. Heading H1K. A resistance thermometer consists of a tem perature sensitive resistance element (e.g. a platinum coil) surrounded by insulating material and assembled in a protective sleeve with a layer of material of high thermal conductivity between the sleeve and tube. The sleeve is pressed into contact with the element by a method which leaves indentations in its outer surface. In a typical arrangement, Fig. 2, the protective sleeve 14 is of a stainless steel containing chromium, nickel and molybdenum. Foils of aluminium, copper or silver are pressed around the glass tube 10 by rolling the outer surface of the sleeve to provide it with circular or helical grooves. Alternatively, or in addition, the sleeve may be grooved longitudinally by rolling and additional grooves may be milled in its surface. The grooving, by locally reducing the wall thickness of the sleeve and improving the thermal contact between sleeve and tube reduces the response time of the thermometer.
