In apparatus in which a sucker 21 removes the top sheet from a pile 1 which is suspended by chains or ropes 4, 5 and raised as the pile diminishes by a motor 8 driving a pulley 7 over which the chains &c. pass, one of the chains passes over a guide wheel 10 adapted to swing in a direction transverse to its axes of rotation upon a sudden change in load to actuate a control switch 17. As shown the coal is mounted on one arm of a bell crank the other arm of which is urged towards the switch by a compression spring 16. When the pile is exhausted, the spring 16 urges the arm to close the switch to stop the feed of the sheets. When a new pile is inserted, the bellcrank is swung to open the switch to start the feed. Alternatively the switch may operate an indicator that the pile is present or absent. Excess chain is wound on a spring drum 9.
