A nuclear reactor moderator comprises a series of adjacent columns each formed by a plurality of bars stocked end to end, some of the columns having longitudinal cylindrical channels therein for receiving fuel elements, and is characterized in that at least some of the fuel channels include grooves extending along the channels, these grooves sensing to increase the coolant flow cross-section, whilst still retaining sufficient of the original channel wall to locate the fuel element radially. Fig. 2 shows a fuel element 14<SP>1</SP>, having longitudinal fins 16<SP>1</SP>, located by its fins in a channel 12<SP>1</SP>; the channel wall includes a number of helical grooves 18. The grooves, whose depth and/or width may vary along their length, will all be of the same pitch, and may either be of the same helix, or arranged in adjacent pairs of opposite helix. Where the fins are circular or helical, straight grooves may be formed in the channel wall. The grooves may either be machined in individual bars, or in assembled columns of bars. The bars may be of graphite or berylium.
