Acylated N-methylol-α, #-unsaturated carboxylic acid amides are prepared by reacting an N-methylol-α, #-unsaturated carboxylic acid amide with a carboxylic acid anhydride or a ketone. Preferred starting materials are N- methylol-acrylic acid amide, N-methylol-methacrylic acid amide, ketene, diketene, acetic anhydride and propionic anhydride. The N- methylol-α, #-unsaturated carboxylic acid amide starting material is preferably produced by treating the corresponding amide with formaldehyde, followedby acylation in the same reaction medium.
