Abstract

1,242,483. Sorbic acid. WACKER-CHEMIE G.m.b.H. 9 Sept., 1969 [18 Sept., 1968], No. 44498/69. Addition to 1,129,574. Heading C2C. Sorbic acid is prepared by reacting ketene with crotonaldehyde in the presence of tetraalkyl titanate (2-18 C) or a condensation product thereof as catalyst at a temperature below 70‹ C., preferably 35-40‹ C., and treating the resulting polyester with at least 20À2% aqueous hydrochloric acid at 50-100‹ C. The crotonaldehyde may be stabilized e.g. by 2,6-ditertbutyl-p-cresol.
