Abstract

1434400 Preparation of carboxylic and sulphonic acid chlorides HOECHST AG 17 Aug 1973 [19 Aug 1972] 38967/73 Heading C2C Carboxylic or sulphonic acid chlorides are prepared by reacting a carboxylic or sulphonic acid and a nitrogen-containing compound, which is an N,N-dialkyl carboxylic amide having at least 4 carbon atoms, an N-alkyl pyrrolidone, or tetramethylurea, in an inert polar watermiscible solvent or diluent, with phosgene, at a temperature of less than 0‹ C. The acid and the nitrogen-containing compound may be used in the form of their salt-like addition compound, and the reaction temperature, which is preferably from -20‹ to 0‹ C., may be allowed to rise to not more than 30‹ C. after the reaction is substantially complete. If the reaction is conducted under an elevated pressure, the latter may be reduced after the reaction is substantially complete, and an excess of the nitrogen-containing compound may be employed as the solvent. The starting materials may be aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, aromatic or heterocyclic mono- or poly-carboxylic or sulphonic acids, many of which are specified. The products may be used directly for a subsequent reaction, e.g. in the preparation of ester or amides, without further treatment or purification.
