Abstract

969,450. Securing sockets on shafts. CHICAGO PNEUMATIC TOOL CO. April 2, 1963 [May 25, 1962], No. 12961/63. Heading F2U. [Also in Division B3] The socket 27 is secured to the shank 26 of an impact wrench by splines 41, 44 and a detent 55 in a transverse bore near the end of the shank, the inner end of the detent being of double frustoconical form and bearing directly against a conical recess 71 near the end of a hexagonal-section axial plunger 62 urged forwardly by a compression spring 65. To release the socket 27 the plunger 62 is pushed rearwardly against the spring 65 to allow the end of the detent 55 to move radially inwards into contact with a second recess 67 at the end of the plunger, whereby the outer end 57 of the detent moves clear of the splines 44 to allow the socket to be withdrawn axially from the shank. The spring 65 bears against a plug 38, a counter spring 36 and fixed abutment rod 34 limiting the rearward movement of plunger 62 during removal of the socket to prevent inadvertent detachment of the detent 55. In a modification, Figs. 12-15 (not shown), the plunger 62 and spring 65 are housed in a closed bore in the shank 26, the plug 38 being omitted. Specifications 784,269 and 874,834 are referred to.
