Abstract

Hydrocarbon oils are dewaxed by forming urea adducts of paraffins with a dispersion of urea prepared by stirring urea or a saturated aqueous solution thereof with an organic dispersion medium at or below the "formation" temperature (at which on cooling a mixture of the organic medium and the saturated urea solution from above its saturation temperature sedimentation of urea ceases on further cooling) and, when a saturated solution of urea is used, also below the saturation temperature of the solution. It is preferred to use an aqueous urea solution having a saturation temperature of 55-105 DEG C., preferably 55-80 DEG C., and to form the adduct below the demixing temperature, i.e. the temperature at which the dispersion on being heated separates into aqueous and an organic solvent phases. As dispersion media there may be used halogenated hydrocarbons, ketones, aliphatic hydrocarbons which do not form adducts with urea, esters, ethers or aliphatic amines, methylene chloride, acetone and octane being preferred. The adducts formed between oils and such urea dispersions are easily separated and are decomposed, e.g. with steam. The urea solution thereby obtained is concentrated, mixed with organic solvent and cooled below the "formation" temperature by allowing a part of the solvent to evaporate.
