Abstract

1,125,177. Solvent extraction C. D. SHIAH. 5 April, 1966, No. 15031/66. Heading C5E. A process of treating a hydrocarbon oil for the purpose of separating said oil into fractions of differing chemical compositions comprises contacting hydrocarbon oil feed with a primary selective solvent comprising a substituted or unsubstituted alkylamide or arylamide to produce a primary raffinate containing the portion of the hydrocarbon oil feed rich in non-aromatic components and a primary extract containing the portion of said oil rich in aromatic components together with a major portion of said primary solvent, contacting said primary extract with a secondary solvent effective in separating said primary solvent from said portion of oil rich in aromatic components, said secondary solvent being an organic hydroxy compound which is completely miscible with said primary solvent but immiscible with said oil, or a paraffinic hydrocarbon having a boiling-point differing from the boiling-point of said hydrocarbon oil feed, which is miscible with said hydrocarbon oil to produce a secondary raffinate and a secondary extract. The primary solvent may comprise dimethyl formamide or dimethyl acetamide. The secondary solvent may be pentane, hexane, mineral spirits, mineral oil, methanol, glycerol or glycol. Some secondary solvent may be added to the primary solvent.
