A photographic processing machine has a hollow roller 6 containing the processing liquid, the roller comprising a perforated cylindrical wall 21 surrounded by a felt layer 22, and an outer flexible sheath 23 containing fine pores. The latter may be a synthetic plastic, and the individual pores may be encircled by inwardly projecting portions so that the sheath is keyed into the felt (Fig. 3, not shown). The roller is mounted on a hollow shaft 7 which receives the liquid from a valve chamber supplied from a reservoir 18. The liquid passes into the cylinder space 25 through perforations 24 in the shaft 7. The paper web or film 3 being treated may be passed over rollers 4 through a series of processing tanks 29, 30, 31 containing, for example, developing, fixing, and washing liquids, and alternately with immersion in the tanks, be treated with hollow rollers 6 containing a stop liquid, hardening agent, and wetting agent respectively. Thus a developing apparatus originally intended for only three treatment operations can be modified to provide six such operations. Figs. (not shown) 5, 6, 7 illustrate various methods of conveying the paper web past a number of such rollers 6. The liquid may be conveyed to the paper from the roller 6 via an intermediate roller.
