[Also in Division G3] A swinging roller 5 controls via a pneumatic control system, the braking of an exhausting roll 1, and therefore the tension of the web, during the time a replacement roll 3 commences to move to the splicing position, until the time the splice takes place. A regulator 9 in the form of a pneumatic force balance, Fig. 2 (not shown), is connected via a conduit 20 to a pneumatic converter or amplifier 29, Fig. 3 (not shown), which supplies the air brake 8 acting on the roll 1 via conduit 24. A constant air pressure is supplied via conduit 11 to one side of the pneumatic balance in the regulator 9. This pressure is adjusted by a controller 12 to give the required tension in the web. A second conduit 10 supplies the other side of the pneumatic balance, and the pressure therein is dependent on the position of the swinging roller operating an indicator such as a valve 7. The two pressures are compared in the regulator 9 and the necessary brake air pressure is adjusted automatically. An electromagnetically operated valve 27 is only open during the time tension control is required.
