Abstract

968,513. Fuel-injection pumps. SOC. ANON. POUR L'EXPLOITATION DES PROC•DES CHIMIQUES ET PHYSIQUES. Nov. 2, 1961 [Nov. 7, 1960], No. 39213/61. Heading F1A. In a self-regulating, cam-actuated fuel injection pump having a reciprocable and rotatable piston 2 supplied by a feed pump via a port 4 and distributing fuel to injectors via ports 5, the period of injection is controlled in relation to engine speed by a shuttle valve 7 controlling a by-pass 6. Shuttle 7 is moved upwardly by liquid pressure from a piston 10 via a channel 13 during the pump delivery stroke and is braked in its return movement under spring 15 by an adjustable throttle 18-in a passage 16, channel 13 having been closed by rotation of piston 10 moving a groove 20 out of register. The arrangement is such that for increased engine speed, shuttle 7 opens by-pass 6 earlier in the delivery stroke and thereby reduces the pump output. Cam 3 has a profile such that the piston assembly is axially stationary for a period at its upper and lower dead centres, during which the opening and closing of channels 12 and 13 with grooves 20 take place. The timing is such that channels 12 and 13 do not communicate with cylinder 11 at the same time. Rotation of pistons 2, 10 is effected through gears 32, 33 and a toothed member 30. In an alternative embodiment, grooves in piston 2 control the channel 13 which in this case opens into the lower end of cylinder 1. Specifications 861,754 and 904,518 are referred to.
