Abstract

A non-flaking, glossy wax composition having a Tinius-Olsen angle of fracture at 36 DEG F. of at least 15 degrees and at 73 DEG F. of at least 20 degrees comprises a major proportion of paraffin wax, a minor proportion of a copolymer of ethylene and vinyl acetate and a minor proportion of microcrystalline wax sufficient to impart gloss retention characteristics to fibrous materials coated with the composition. The specified paraffin wax has a melting-point of 120-150 DEG F. and the microcrystalline wax has a melting-point of 155-210 DEG F. Proportions specified are 50-89.5 weight per cent peraffin wax, 0.5-40 weight per cent copolymer and 10-35 weight per cent microcrystalline wax. The fibrous material may be coated by dipping or spraying with or in the molten wax.ALSO:Fibrous fluid containers, e.g. cardboard milk cartons, and metal containers, are coated by dipping or spraying in or with a molten wax composition having a Tinius-Olsen angle of fracture at 36 DEG F. of at least 15 degrees and at 73 DEG F. of at least 20 degrees comprising a major proportion of paraffin wax, a minor proportion of a copolymer of ethylene and vinyl acetate and a minor proportion of microcrystalline wax sufficient to impart gloss retention characteristics to fibrous materials coated with the composition. The specified paraffin wax has a melting point of 120-150 DEG F. and the microcrystalline wax has a melting point of 155-210 DEG F.
