Abstract

A wax composition contains 5 to 50% of polyethylene of M.W 3000 to 12,000 density between 0.880 and 0.910 and between 7 and 12% of its carbon atoms being branched chain carbons, and 5 to 90% of an intermediate wax obtained from high boiling wax distillate fraction of petroleum and having an M.P. between 140 DEG and 170 DEG F., a viscosity of less than 10 centistokes at 210 DEG F. and a refractive index at 194 DEG F. of at least 1.4292 + 0.0002 refractive index units per DEG F. by which the M.P. of the wax exceeds 140 DEG F. Microcrystalline wax or paraffin wax also may be present. The compositions find use as coatings for heat-sealable sheet material wherein the base sheet may be paper, metal foil/paper laminate, regenerated cellulose or plastic film.
