Abstract

A wax composition having a Tinius-Olsen angle of fracture at 36 DEG F. of at least 11 degrees and at 73 DEG F. of at least 20 degrees, comprises a major proportion of a relatively low melting point paraffin wax (e.g. 125-132 DEG F.) and minor proportions of laminating microcrystalline wax, relatively high melting point paraffin wax (e.g. 148-154 DEG F.) and a normally solid copolymer of ethylene and vinyl acetate containing 5-15 moles of ethylene per mole of vinyl acetate. Proportions specified are 40-84.5% relatively low melting point wax, 5-25% relatively high melting point wax, 10-30% laminating microcrystalline wax and 0.5-5% copolymer. The composition may also contain 0.5-3% distillate petroleum oil having a viscosity at 100 DEG F. of 70-3500 Saybalt Universal seconds, 0.0015-2% of anti-oxidants as well as certain amides which reduce frictional drag of coated articles.ALSO:Metal and fibrous containers, e.g. cardboard milk containers and paper drinking cups are coated by dipping in or spraying with a molten wax composition having a Tinius-Olsen angle of fracture at 36 DEG F. of at least 11 degrees and at 73 DEG F. of at least 20 degrees, comprising a major proportion of a relatively low melting point paraffin wax (e.g. 125-132 DEG F.) and minor proportions of laminating microcrystalline wax, relatively high melting point paraffin wax (e.g. 148-154 DEG F.) and a normally solid copolymer of ethylene and vinyl acetate containing 5-15 moles of ethylene per mole of vinyl acetate.
