An oil burner unit comprises an electric motor 26 immersed in fuel oil in a pot-shaped chamber in a housing 10, a fuel pump 28 mounted in a second chamber in the housing 10 and connected to the lower end of the shaft 27 of the motor 26, a passageway 62 in the housing conveying oil from the top of the pot-shaped chamber to the pump 28 and passageways (not shown) in the housing conveying high-pressure oil from the pump to and from a return flow type nozzle 24 mounted on the housing. A fan 30 is mounted in a further housing 12 of scroll configuration sealing the top of the pot-shaped chamber and is connected to the upper end of the shaft 27 of the motor. A pressure regulating valve 66 is provided in the pump outlet and a check valve and a further pressure regulating valve 94 are provided in the return flow passages. The fan supplies air to a tube 22 surrounding the fuel nozzle and the air intake of the fan is adjusted by a cap 108 having a stem 110 threaded into a web 104 extending across the air inlet. The upper plate 40 of pump 28 has a rim 42 with a spherical surface which receives a conical ring 32 welded to the motor housing. The upper end of the motor 26 is similarly located by a sleeve 44 having a spherical surface urged by a spring into contact with another conical ring 32 welded to the motor housing. Before welding, each conical ring is located accurately by a fixture 34, Fig. 3, which is telescoped over the end of the motor shaft 27, and has a spherical surface 34 for engaging the conical ring 32. Spark electrodes 82 are supported by the air tube 22 and are connected to a transformer 84 by separable connectors 83. The power supply is connected to a junction-box 85 from which connections are made to transformer 84, motor 26 and a flame detector (not shown), adjacent the nozzle 24. The motor is a shaded pole type.
