Abstract
968,347. Silencing gaseous currents. POLYCARBURE. Aug. 16, 1961 [Aug. 19, 1960], No. 29552/61. Heading FIB. A gaseous flow silencer comprises a flow passage having a flexible wall 3, Fig. 1, supported on the spaced turns of a coil spring 4, which extends longitudinally of the flow passage and is vibratable between its support points to transmit acoustic vibrations to a space, on the outside of the wall, where the vibrations are damped. The wall 3 is supported so that it is more stretched nearer to the inlet tube 1. The wall may be made of rubber, an impervious resilient synthetic material, a resilient porous open-cell material such as foam rubber or of knitted or woven vegetable, animal, mineral or artificial fibres. When used as an intake silencer the wall may be a cotton fabric with an outer coating of graphited latex and for exhaust gases the fabric consists of a non-inflammable material such as asbestos or glass fibre or a pervious weave of glass threads supporting a layer of glass fibre felt. In another embodiment a central duct 12, Fig. 3, is surrounded by helically-wound ducts 13, 14, the difference in lengths of the passages being equal to half the length of the sound wave being damped. The sheath 17 is of glass wool, kapok, mineral wool felt or if of foam rubber, the fabric wall is omitted. In a modification a number of consecutive systems may be tuned to different frequency. In a further embodiment the duct is surrounded by resonance chambers, the volumes of which increase in one half of the silencer and decrease in the other half. In a modification two side ducts 52, 53, Fig. 6, extend helically around a perforate central duct 51 inside a casing 21 which is subdivided into a number of chambers by partitions 54-58.
