Abstract

967,527. Suction lifting devices. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Nov. 22, 1962 [Dec. 21, 1961], No. 44217/62. Headings B8B and B8H. A hoist 20 is supported from a ceiling 2 by a suction device which comprises a rigid platform 6 with holes 7, a flexible annular diaphragm 34 and a blower 10 which draws air downwards in the direction of the arrows, thereby producing a reduction in pressure in a space 50. The diaphragm 34 and platform 6 are attached to each other by sealing rings 40, 42. When the blower is operating air at atmospheric pressure enters the space between the diaphragm and the platform through holes 7 and maintains the diaphragm in the shape shown. The small gap which exists between the device and the ceiling allows the device to be moved in any direction. Channel members 13, 14 support the device when the blower is inoperative. Guide channels without supporting flanges 16, 18 may be provided.
