990,745. Pneumatic lifting jacks; moving heavy loads; supports for lifting tackle. HOVERCRAFT DEVELOPMENT Ltd. Jan. 3, 1963 [Jan. 9, 1962], No. 863/62. Headings B8B and B8J. [Also in Division B7] Apparatus for moving a load 12 (Fig. 3), comprises a gas retaining envelope 10 positioned over the load with its open mouth presented towards the surface over which the load is to be moved and supplied with gas at sufficient pressure to raise at least a portion 17 of the envelope to which the load is attached The envelope may comprise a single sheet of flexible material 49 (Fig. 9), strengthened by stiffeners such as inflatable tubes 48 or may comprise an inflatable double walls 20, 21 interconnected by webs, or cords (not shown). The load 12 is attached as by ropes 14 to a strengthened member 17 of the envelope to reduce the load concentration. Gas is supplied to the inside of the envelope and between the double walls as by flexible pipes 16 from a compressor 11 which may be mobile. The lower edge portion of the envelope may also be adapted to include an annular plenum chamber 25 with a slot 26 for producing a curtain 27 of gas assisting to retain the cushion of gas within the envelope 10. In a modification the envelope 10, Fig. 14, may be adapted to carry a winch 56 for raising the load.
