Abstract
967,521. Heavy current switches. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORPORATION. July 18, 1962 [Sept. 19, 1961], No. 27596/62. Heading H2B. A switch in a sealed enclosure containing arc extinguishing gas, such as the switch of Specifications 967,522 and 967,523, has a device responsive solely to a drop in the density of the gas to prevent the opening of the switch if gas is lost from the enclosure. The device is a sealed bellows 102 mounted on the frame 24 of the operating mechanism within the enclosure. The free end of the bellows carries a lock-pin 103 so that should gas be lost from the enclosure, the bellows expands and moves the pin 103 into the path of movement of the pivoted lever 19 of the lever system described in Specification 967,522, so preventing the opening movement of that system. A recess may be provided in the side of the lever 19 so that should the contacts be open when a loss of gas occurs, the pin 103 engages in the recess and prevents the reclosing of the contacts. The bellows may be filled with the same gas as that in the enclosure so as to be insensitive to pressure changes due to changes in temperature. Should the bellows leak, the pin 103 is moved to prevent operation of the switch. The pin 103 may have a transverse pin 111 which, when the bellows expands, prevents the tripping movement of a trip bar 112 and so prevents the tripping of the switch by the mechanism described in Specification 967,523.
