Abstract

The invention comprises the compounds of formula <FORM:0967360/C1/1> where R1 and R2 are hydrogen, methyl or ethyl, B is a pyridinium or alkylpyridinium radical and X is halogen, and their double salts with zinc chloride; their preparation by halomethylating an a , b -bis-[benzoxayolyl-2]-ethylene or -ethane, reacting the product with a pyridine or alkyl pyridine, and, if an ethane compound was employed, treating with a mild oxidant, such as mercuric acetate, mercuric oxide, hydrogen peroxide or nitrobenzene; and the production of the zinc chloride double salts by dissolving equimolar amounts of product and zinc chloride in water and salting out the double salt. The halomethylation can be carried out with formaldehyde and hydrogen halide, or with di-halogenmethyl ether. The products of the invention are optical brightening agents (see Division D1).ALSO:Textile materials are optically brightened by treatment at from room temperature to 130 DEG C., with an aqueous solution of pH 2-10 of a brightening agent of formula <FORM:0967360/D1-D2/1> where R1 and R2 are hydrogen, methyl or ethyl, B is a pyridinium or alkyl pyridinium radical and X is halogen or a zinc chloride double salt thereof (see Division C2). The process may be combined with a dyeing, bleaching, finishing or washing process. Specified materials are polyacrylonitrile or its copolymers, polyamides, polypropylene, polyethylene, polyvinyl acetal, viscose rayon, cellulose acetate, and cotton. The acidity of the solution is adjusted with an organic acid or an inorganic or organic salt. In exemplified solutions the additives present include sodium chlorite, formic acid, sodium carbonate, and a non-ionic washing agent. After-treatments exemplified are treatments with aqueous solutions of (1) NaHSO3; (2) NaClO3 + formic acid.
