Abstract
An electrolytic recording medium comprises a support impregnated with protocatechnic acid in an electrolytically conducting solution. The support may be white paper. The conducting solution may be an aqueous solution of a nitrate, chloride or bromide of sodium, calcium, potassium, lithium, magnesium, rubidium, or caesium. The solution may also contain an acidifier, e.g. sulphuric or citric acid, or a stabilizer, e.g. thiourea, an alkyl derivative of thiourea or dithiobiuret. One example also includes monosodium phosphate or an antifringing agent. In use, the medium is passed between and in contact with electrodes one of which contains a metal e.g. iron capable of eroding to supply metal ions to the medium, an electric current is passed between the electrodes so that metal from the one electrode forms ions in the medium and the ions react with the protocatechnic acid to form a grey or black mark on the medium.
