Abstract

An electrolytic recording medium comprises a support, e.g paper, impregnated with an electrolytically conductive solution of a marking compound that can produce colour by combination with electrode-metal ions, and the solution includes also an agent that can sequester the electrode-metal ions to form a colourless complex. The metal may be iron, chromium, copper or nickel. The marking compound may be methylene-disalicylic acid, tannic acid, catechol or protocatechnic acid. The sequesting agent may be a water-soluble salt of ethylenediaminetetracetic acid, hydroxyethylethylenediaminetriacetic acid, di(hydroxyethyl) glycine or diethylenetriaminepentacetic acid. The electrolyte may be a chloride, bromide or nitrate of an alkali metal. The following are also present in some of the examples: sodium hydroxide, oxalic acid, thiourea and monosodium dihydrogen phosphate.
