Abstract

N, N'-disubstituted tetrahydro-4, 4'-bipyridyls are prepared by reducing the corresponding N-substituted pyridinium salts in aqueous medium in the presence of a water-immiscible organic solvent for the tetrahydrobipyridyl product. The reduction may be effected electrolytically whence it is preferred to use a neutral or alkaline aqueous solution of the N-substituted pyridinium salt as electrolyte and to maintain the cathode potential within \sB 0.2 volts of the polarographic half-wave potential for the reduction of the particular pyridinium salt used. It is further preferred for the electrolyte to contain a salt of high conductance in solution in a concentration below 5 molar.ALSO:N,N1 - Disubstituted tetrahydro - 4:41-bipyridyls are prepared by reducing the corresponding N-substituted pyridinium salts in aqueous medium in the presence of a water-immiscible organic solvent for the tetrahydrobipyridyl product. The reduction may be effected by means of an alkali metal amalgam or electrolytically.
