966, 472. Thread traversing mechanism. S.E.T.I.C. Aug. 2, 1963 [Aug. 10,1962], No. 30660/63. Heading D1J. Thread, fed from a fixed thread guide to a rotating take-up reel to be wound thereon is traversed over the length of the reel by causing the reel to oscillate about an axis which is perpendicular to the axis of rotation of the reel and which passes through the centre point of the reel, the amplitude of the oscillation is selected to cause the planes of the end flanges of the reel to become aligned alternately with the fixed point from which the thread is fed. Thread 17 is fed from a fixed guide point A and wound on a reel 14 forming part of a double-twist thread winding apparatus the reel rotating about the axis XX<SP>1</SP> and oscillating about an axis perpendicular thereto and passing through its centre point B. Oscillation is caused by a radial arm 1 having a roller 2 at its end which engages in a recess 3 in a nut 4 which is moved to and fro along a rotating screw 5 provided with two oppositely handed threads. The amplitude of the oscillation may be varied e.g. for reels of varying axial length by altering the length of the arm 1. Drive to the screw 5 is linked with the rotation of the reel by a suitable gear train (Fig. 3 not shown) and thus the winding pitch and rate of traverse may be determined by the selection of suitable ratios of the gears in the gear train.
