[Also in Division G4] In an optical gauging system, relative movement is effected between a component 10 to be gauged and a light beam which is directed at one or more light sensitive devices 9 so that the component 10 cuts. off light from said devices 9 during at least a part of said relative movement, pulses being produced during said relative movement for comparison with a predetermined quantity for each dimension being gauged. Each of a number of photo-cells 9 positioned behind rectangular holes in a common screen 7 (see also Fig. 2, not shown), and which may be adjustable in position, measures the width at a corresponding height of the component 10, holding open a corresponding gate 16 when the photo-cell 9 is in shadow. The moving carrier 11 for the component 10, on which the component 10 is mounted by means of a jig 19 under the control of a mechanical or electromechanical handling system 20, produces pulses by a moire fringe system, the pulses being fed via the gates 16 to corresponding counters 21. A programming unit 22 supplies pulse trains representing the desired values of the dimensions to the counters 21 for comparison with the actual values. If the tolerances are exceeded, control of the machine producing the components 10, or of the handling system 20 to reject the components, is effected. A warning is also given. The programme unit also controls switches 17 to determine which dimensions will be taken into account, and switches 25 to determine which of the measured dimensions are recorded in a printer 24.
